Who Lights Up the Night Sky in Dallas?

The hands at the helm of Dallas’ wondrous light displays have a dream job—creating art out of electricity and painting a larger-than-life canvas for all to see.

In the world of artistic lighting, the Omni Hotel has made its colorful mark on Dallas’ newly redeveloped south side. Recently, the fully lit, 20-story exterior became a movie screen for the 2013 Expanded Cinema event and hosted hundreds of visitors who gathered outside to watch movies on the city’s biggest “big screen.”

Pat Anderson of Matthews Southwest is in charge of launching the Omni lightshow, which often pays tribute to big sporting events, holidays and charitable organizations. Look across the skyline on a certain weekend in the fall, and you’ll see Texas/OU colors. Check back on July 4th and you’re likely to see fireworks played out along the side of the building.

Anderson also considers the space a great opportunity to acknowledge those who’ve made social contributions. “When Nelson Mandela died, I came home from work that evening and saw the story on the news and thought I should do something special. So I decided to put up the South African flag,” he said. “My favorite part is having the opportunity to participate in the view of the downtown skyline on a daily basis—to look at any picture of the skyline and know that I played a small part in that beautiful image.”

A few blocks away, the ball that started it all is operated by Daryl Vaughan, owner of Light Partners. Since 1978, Reunion Tower has brightened the skyline, and Vaughan, a renowned lighting expert who has worked with entertainers such as Elton John, The Rolling Stones and U2, is committed to celebrating all things Dallas. Passersby often know when the Cowboys, Rangers, Stars or Mavericks have won a game, simply by looking at the Reunion ball pulsing with team colors.

“There is a responsibility in doing this, because Dallas feels a sense of ownership of Reunion Tower,” Vaughan says. “After all, it is Dallas’ Eiffel Tower or Empire State. It’s an iconic landmark and everyone feels proud of it.”

Today, even more buildings are jumping on the color bandwagon. Long known as “The Green Monster,” the Bank of America Plaza recently replaced green bulbs with efficient LEDs that also allow for a kaleidoscope of color options. The tower showcased its dazzling new multicolor capability by spreading the love with an all-red statement on Valentine’s Day.

On special occasions the whole city teams up to paint a portrait of celebration or support. Recently, Shalissa Colwell, Marketing Director for Downtown Dallas Inc., emailed building managers about recognizing Mayor Mike Rawlings’ domestic violence awareness campaign. At the end of March, the city will “Paint the Town Purple” in support of the effort.

“As more buildings add lighting and programming capabilities, we’re seeing more and more attention on the beautiful skyline,” says Colwell. “It’s a great way to introduce the world to Dallas.”
