Fastest Growing Cities Since 2007? Fort Worth and Irving

Fastest Growing Cities Since 2007 - Fort Worth and Irving 330 Las Colinas Boulevard 1620 in Irving

Jobs, good schools and affordable housing made Irving and Fort Worth two of the nation’s fastest-growing cities since the recession. This penthouse space at 330 Las Colinas Boulevard #1620 in Irving offers unbeatable views..

In its latest analysis of growth in America’s cities, Forbes magazine names Fort Worth and Irving two of the fastest-growing cities since the recession.

Fort Worth comes in at No. 6, with Irving following close on its heels at No. 7.

Fort Worth’s 2012 population was 777,992, representing 14.3 percent growth since 2007, according to the Forbes report. Irving’s 2012 population was 225,427, representing 13.8 percent growth.

Forbes journalist Joel Kotkin suggests this analysis refutes what pundits have been saying about housing since the recession: that people were leaving the suburbs in droves, and heading to dense urban cores. Suburbs, he says, are thriving.

From Kotkin’s article:

Nothing in the data, however suggests a revival of the older, dense “legacy” cities that were typical of the late 19th century and pre-war era. Most of the fastest-growing big cities since 2007 are of the sprawling post-1945 Sun Belt variety.

The other somewhat surprising result is the strong performance of more purely suburban cities, that is, ones that have grown up since car ownership became nearly universal. They are not the historic cores of their regions but have developed into major employment centers with housing primarily made up of single-family residences.

What do these results tell us? First, that Americans continue to move decisively to both lower-density, job-creating cities and to those less dense areas of major metropolitan areas particularly where single-family houses, good schools and jobs are plentiful.

Irving thrived through the recession. This Dallas-area suburb is a major job center. Headquarters for Nokia , NEC Corporation of America, Blackberry, and Exxon Mobil, Irving’s population has soared over 13 percent over the past five years to 225,000.
