Celebrate 100 Years in Highland Park! Watch the Video

Although Highland Park celebrates its official 100th anniversary this year, its root are much older.

Texas Rangers first camped along “the creeks with all the turtles” in 1837. A year later, the Republic of Texas surveyed two old American Indian trails to be part of a road north from Austin. The road wound up as part of current Preston Road.

In 1843, Dr. John Cole of Virginia received 420 acres from the Republic. That grant included what is now Highland Park and University Park. Gravel streets were laid out between 1886 and 1889 as part of planned settlement, but financial problems ended construction.

In 1907, John Armstrong, along with two family members, began development of a residential area to be called Highland Park. There were plans to reserve 20 percent of the land for parks. The first lots were sold in 1909, and the town was incorporated in 1913.
