Best Things to Do at the Perot Museum

The new Perot Museum of Nature and Science has been overwhelmingly popular since opening last December, with tickets sold out several weeks in advance.

But the experience is worth the wait— Guide writer Joy Tipping commented, “If you’ve driven downtown during the past couple of years, you’ve probably seen and wondered about that gorgeous, cube-shaped building going up. The outside is spectacular, and what’s inside is even more mind-blowing.”

Here are a few must-do activities and attractions at the Perot Museum:

From the Dallas Morning News:

Build Your Own Bird

In the Hall of Birds on Level 4M, you can craft your own flying creature by picking body type , wing styles, feather types, call types, eating habits and other traits. I emerged having created the fabulously bright blue, peacock-tailed “Fanned Chick.” You can also try out the flight simulator to feel like a bird on the wing, and even the benches boast information, such as this tidbit: The average person accidentally eats 430 bugs each year of his or her life.

Journey Through the Solar System

In this exhibit in the Expanding Universe Hall, you stand amid giant screens as the video-audio presentation leads you on a jaw-dropping journey from the sun to Mercury, to Venus, to Earth and beyond.

OK, his head and teeth aren’t as fierce as the T. rex’s, but the sheer size of the 85-foot Alamosaurus makes Mr. Rex appear teensy by comparison in the Life Then and Now Hall on Level 4. After gazing at dino bones of all sizes, you can create a creature, choosing attributes such as mimicry patterns, smells and protective shells.

Earthquake Shake

In the Dynamic Earth Hall on Level 3, you can stand on a platform and push the buttons for minor earthquake (based on a 2011 quake in Karnes County, Texas), major (based on the 1994 LA quake) and extreme. It’s intense; I couldn’t have remained standing on the extreme setting without the handrail.

Robot Arena

Design and build your own remote-control vehicle, then test it out in the Engineering and Innovation Hall on Level 2. Make your robot follow a figure-eight pattern, play tick-tack-toe, or invent your own challenges, solo or with a partner. You can also make music and LCD art.

Dallas Skyline Climber

This jewel of the Children’s Museum on the Lower Level features towering replicas of Reunion Tower, the Magnolia Building with Pegasus topping it, Fountain Place, Chase Tower (the “keyhole” building) and others that kids can climb and crawl through. Look out the museum’s picture windows and you’ll see many of the actual buildings.
