Home Sales Up 10% in September

From The Dallas Morning News: Back-to-school days didn’t mean that North Texas home-buyers backed away from the housing market in September.
Pre-owned home sales in North Texas were up again in September — the 15th month in a row that monthly home purchases have been higher than the previous year.
Real Estate agents sold 6,103 single-family homes through their multiple listing service last month, a 10 percent year-over-year gain, according to the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University and North Texas Real Estate Information Systems.
With September’s increase, home sales in the area this year are 15 percent ahead of where they were through the first nine months of 2011.
And analysts don’t see any sign that the local housing market will soon slow.
“Sales in August and September didn’t have the kind of fall off that we normally expect,” said Dr. James Gaines, an economist with the Real Estate Center. “Overall, I’m looking for total sales to be up about 12 to 13 percent for the year.”
“Yes, sales probably will slow seasonally on a month-to-month basis but still be running nearly 10 percent greater than same month last year,” he said.
“The degree of fall-off on a month-to-month basis may not be as great as past years, as people are looking at housing as an opportunity as rents have increased over the past year, making ownership a little more attractive financially.”
